CSR & Sustainability

Henkel Anand is a JV of ANAND India with Henkel KGaA, Germany. Formerly known as Henkel Teroson India, HAIPL is a leading producer of adhesives, sealants and NVH products in India. Presently, the company operates out of four major locations in India – Parwanoo in Himachal Pradesh, Gurugram in Haryana, Kurukumbh near Pune, Maharashtra and Chengalpattu, near Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

 

HAIPL delivers on its CSR commitments by partnering with SNS Foundation, ANAND Group’s CSR arm; other NGO partners and also goes into self-implementation for certain projects.

 

HAIPL CSR is structured to contribute to four (of a total of 17) of United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG) for 2030: Goal 3 Good Health and Hygiene, Goal 4 Quality Education, Goal 7 Affordable and Clean Energy & Goal 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities.

 

The designing of CSR activities at HAIPL is also influenced by the same at Henkel global. The four pillars around which CSR activities are planned in Henkel across geographies include-

 

Guided by the several factors mentioned above, which are core values of Henkel corporate citizenship at the global level, influence of UN SDGs and mode of implementation, the following broad picture evolves for HAIPL CSR-

  • Edu-carea program on Enhancing Quality Education run in municipal and govt. schools of Navi Mumbai and Kurukumbh, Pune in partnership with NGO EDREST. Key highlights with EDREST include the 
  • Digital class initiative under which students are provided state board curriculum in multimedia format
  • Adaptation of Henkel’s global CSR program ‘Forscherwelt’ or ‘Researchers’ World’ to local schools, many of which do not have laboratories. The program encourages children to be curious and develop a spirit of discovery by giving them hands-on experience of conducting scientific experiments.
  • Community Solar Lighting at District Palghar, Maharashtra – in partnership with NGO United Way, Mumbai and E-Hands Energy, an organization engaged in the business of manufacturing and distribution of renewable energy systems. The program entails getting requisite permissions from concerned authorities for deployment of solar electrification and sensitizing villagers to use power judiciously. Schools and households in these villages have benefitted from LED lights and energy efficient fans that run on solar energy.

Development of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths)  Book Titles in partnership with NGO Pratham Books  

Schwarzkopf Professional’s ‘Shaping Futures’ initiative enables underprivileged youth to build a better future by learning the hairdresser’s trade. During the course of the training, international hairdressers of repute cover five key areas of this profession, namely: consultation, cutting, dressing, color and form. The training also offers candidates, an opportunity to meet and engage with local salon owners, which opens avenues for them to pursue careers at nearby salons.

 

The Schwarzkopf Professional volunteers are also salon partners of Henkel from Europe. ‘Shaping Futures’, a good example of shared value between Schwarzkopf, Henkel’s non-profit partners, and local salon owners in India, have successfully influenced the lives of many underprivileged youth.

  • Making an Impact on Tomorrow (MIT) – Support to schools for special children, Sarvodaya School, Nala Sopara, Mumbai; Maharashtra Fellowship for Deaf, Pune and Punarvas Bal Rang, Goregaon, Mumbai.

Campaigns such as NGO-‘Shop for a Cause’-events, Donation drives for clothes/footwear/stationery, E-waste drives and Sustainability School Program – a global initiative aimed at creating awareness among school children on how they can contribute to sustainability

Edu-care – certain infrastructure development projects in govt. schools are taken up directly for implementation by HAIPL. For e.g. Construction of washrooms at Govt. High School, Katrambakkam (Chengalpattu, Chennai); Construction of two classrooms at Govt. Middle School, Sector 14, Gurugram, Renovation of boys’ washrooms, drinking water facility of girls & boys and construction of wash area at Govt.  High School, Islampur, Construction of  one hall at Govt. Higher Secondary School, Masulkhana (Parwanoo)

 

HAIPL CSR PROGRAMS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SNS FOUNDATION

 

Of the total of four UN SDGs which are addressed by Henkel India CSR, three are impacted through its partnership projects with SNS Foundation. These three are – Goal 3 Good Health and Hygiene, Goal 4 Quality Education and Goal 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities.

  1. Goal 4 of Quality Education discusses approaches to Ensure Inclusive and Equitable Quality Education and Promote Lifelong Learning Opportunities for All. The approaches discussed under the ten targets of this goal include early childhood development and pre-primary education in a bid to lay a strong foundation for sound learning during primary schooling Further it lays stress on ensuring secondary education for all and making technical, vocational and tertiary education universally accessible with a special focus on those vulnerable, persons with disabilities and indigenous peoples among others.

 

Goal 4 also discusses on aspects of expanding scholarships in developing countries to advance enrolments in higher education including vocational training and technical, engineering and scientific programmes. The goal also encourages investments in building and upgrading education facilities to provide safe, nonviolent, inclusive and effective learning environments.

 

Delivering quality education without disparities and discrimination of any kind is at the heart of this goal.

 

The sentiments and aspirations of UN SDG 4 are embodied in five key initiatives of HAIPL CSR which fall under the Education and Skill Development focus areas of SNS Foundation.

 

  1. Engagement with govt. schools at Parwanoo and Chengalpattu (Chennai) – CSR contributions from Henkel ANAND have been put into use to support the following across 22 schools, 11 each in Parwanoo and Chengalpattu –
  2. Training of Underprivileged Youth as Electricians (Parwanoo) – This one-year electrician training programme has drawn students from different districts of the state of Himachal Pradesh viz. Solan, Una, Sirmour, Hamirpur, Mandi, Shimla, Bilaspur, Chamba, Kangra and Mandi. The course is certified by National Institute of Open Schooling, an autonomous body under Ministry of Human Resource Development, GoI. Staying away from home, these students pick up their living expenses working in factories that dot the industrial township of Parwanoo, while attending the training programme. Post completion, the course graduates find employment in maintenance departments of hotels, industries or start off on their own. From 2014 onwards, 272 male youth have graduated from this course.
  3. Training of Underprivileged Youth as Plumbers (Gurugram) – To generate a means of livelihood for youth from underprivileged backgrounds, Henkel ANAND began a Plumbing Training Centre at SNS Foundation, Gurugram in partnership with Kohler India. A comprehensive set-up with the latest sanitary ware has been installed at the training centre that gives trainees hands on knowledge along with academic inputs. As much as 70% of the course delivery is focused on practical training. In addition to Kohler India, the two certifying agencies of the training provided are International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) and Indian Plumbing Association (IPA). Youth are trained under two different programmes –
    Beginning July 2015, 300+ youth have been trained as plumbers. Top employers of the plumbing graduates are Kohler India itself followed by Lemon Tree Hotels, Vatika Builders, Jaquar, Weltech, Larsen & Toubro, LIVSPACE, SARE Homes and others. Average monthly salary earned by a plumbing graduate from the Henkel ANAND – SNSF – Kohler training centre is ₹12.5K. Highest CTC drawn till date by a graduate has been ₹3.24 Lacs placed as a Kohler Technical Associate in Bengaluru.The technical training in plumbing is complemented with trainings in soft skills, financial literacy, spoken English and Basic Computers.  
  4. Training of women and adolescent girls in NSDC certified courses viz. Assistant Beauty Therapist, Self-Employed Tailor/Sewing Machine Operator, Assistant Fashion Designer and other courses in ITeS, Nursery Teachers’ Training etc. – Annually around 1K underprivileged women and adolescent girls in Gurugram and Rewari graduate from the various courses mentioned above. Many of those trained are employed earning a fixed income, while others are involved in home-based entrepreneurial activities.

OUTCOMES: In 2018, HAIPL commissioned an external evaluation by Mumbai based organization Social Lens of its CSR initiatives being undertaken through SNS Foundation and other NGOs. Some outcomes of the evaluation w.r.t. Skill Development are mentioned below –

 

The study was also able to find a clear elevation of financial status through increase in monthly income of trainees upon completion of their course with SNS Foundation.
